We were alerted to this charming and picturesque small hotel, by a reader. Tucked away in the tiny hamlet of Oakford Bridge in the beautiful Exe Valley, it’s a delightful discovery. Owner Alastair Kameen's training includes a prestigious Relais et Châteaux establishment; his aim is to create the perfect spot for a short break in the country. Inside, there is an intimate and cosy sitting room with an open fire, and a particularly welcoming dining room, candlelit at night. Alastair is the cook, and his food, when we visited, was both innovative and carefully presented. The bedrooms reflect the essential simplicity of Bark House, but they are also comfortable. Above all, the atmosphere, engendered by Alastair and his assistant, Justine, is gentle and relaxed. TEL (01398) 351236
